Research Clusters
In the School of Computing and IT (SoCIT) research culture is deeply entrenched within their teaching philosophy that enriches the knowledge exchange that takes place in the classroom. By using real research examples and industry case studies in the classroom, the lecturers are able to inspire students to adopt a research-driven approach to problemsolving. SoCIT’s research focus areas include Security, Networks, Software Engineering, Knowledge Technologies, and Multimedia & Web Technologies clustered under the two major research groups Cyber Security, and Smart Technologies and Applications.
 
 
Security
There is increasing concern about cyber terrorism, cyber warfare and regulatory compliance. As a result, there is a continued demand for security experts who are able to prevent security breaches and vulnerabilities. This research group focuses on studying and developing methods, tools and or applications to enhance security of information, and networks or the Internet.
 
Networks
This group performs research on Internet Architecture, IPv6 Protocols, Internet addressing that includes IPv6 addressing, Internet Routing and Switching, Quality of Service (QoS), Wireless Networks, Network Security, Future Internet, and Internet Governance.
 
Software Engineering
This group focuses on software requirements, design, development, formal methods, testing, traceability, reverse engineering, object and aspect-oriented programming, software development tools empirical studies, and software project management.
 
Knowledge Technologies
This group conducts research on information storage, retrieval, dissemination, management of data, information systems and technologies, data warehousing, knowledge discovery, knowledge management, decision support, semantic web, ontology, artificial intelligence, data mining, business intelligence, context aware systems, social network analysis, web mining, opinion mining, and semantic search.
 
Multimedia and Web Technologies
This research group explores the technology and application areas that includes Information hiding, compressed image or video processing, E-learning, edutainment, gaming (multi-player, online, mobile), rich media web portals, multimedia information systems, Social networking applications, social web (Blogs, YouTube, Flickr, Facebook, etc.), Virtual reality and e-commerce or e-business.
 
 
Research Grants
The School has succeeded in acquiring various research grants in recent years, totaling about RM1.3 million. Recent active research grants are identified below.

Apart from External and Internal Research grants, staff in the last couple of years have worked on consultancy projects under the MSC Malaysia Innovation voucher programme worth about RM100,000 in total.

Staff involve students in research and consultancy that they are actively engaged. They take every opportunity through the modules they teach to identify prospective students who could participate and can be groomed in research and consultancy that they are engaged. Undergraduate students in association with staff have published several research papers in cited International Conferences and Journals. A couple of these students have also acquired travel grants to participate and present their paper at International Conferences.
