Modelling and visualization of air pollution and its impact on health

Project Title: Modelling and visualization of air pollution and its impact on health
 
 
Brief of Project:
 
The pollutants namely ozone (), nitrogen dioxide (), carbon monoxide (CO), particulate matter () and sulfur dioxide () samples will be collected from the study area namely Greater Kuala Lumpur. The hybrid land use regression (LUR) model will be developed to estimate the pollutants concentration  using the predictor variables namely density residential land, industry, port, urban green, forest area, number of buildings, area of water and traffic intensity. The LUR model is one of the most widely used exposure assessment tools in air pollution epidemiological researches to estimate the pollutants concentration. These estimation will be used for the quantification of the health impact namely all-cause mortality and respiratory and cardiovascular morbidity. The health impact due to air pollution will be determined and the concentration response functions will be established. The concentration response functions (odd ratios) will be obtained using three types of regression models (linear, logistic, cox).
 
This project will consolidate the findings of the air quality and health researches, data scientists, department of environment, ministry of health and public to have a deeper knowledge of airborne Particulate Matter (PM) and its impact on human health. This study will develop and implement a methodology to assess the health impacts of particulate matter resulting from air pollution in Kuala Lumpur. This study will provide a database of ‘measurement of health impact’ and ‘air pollution exposure estimation’ for Kuala Lumpur.

Specific Qualifications/ Requirements:
Degree in Computer Science / Bio-Science / Environmental study / Statistics / Mathematics
 
Stipend and Benefits: Students are encouraged to apply for PhD scholarship (applicable for PhD students with 100% tuition fee waiver and stipend) or Research scholarship (applicable for both Master’s and PhD students with 75% tuition fee waiver and stipend). Refer to ‘Postgraduate Funding’ for eligibility, application and selection details for the scholarships. Successful candidates who do not qualify for the above-mentioned scholarships will be funded through a Graduate Student Assistant Scheme with a monthly stipend of RM 1800-2500. Students will be enrolled in PhD in Computer Science (Data Science) under the School of Computing & IT and MSc in Computer Science (Data Science) under the School of Computing & IT.
