GUIDELINES FOR HUMAN ETHICS APPLICATION

The Taylor's University Human Ethics Committee (TUHEC) undertakes ethics review of all research involving human participants including funded and unfunded research which is non-medical.

The TUHEC examines the ethics components of the research such as, sound methodology, possible risks to the subjects, recruitment of subjects, consent from the subjects, confidentiality or anonymity for the subjects, the way in which the data is handled, and how feedback can be provided for the subjects.

Human ethics approval is required for all research conducted with or about people, or their data or tissue. The purpose of ethics review is to facilitate research that fulfils the principles of human research ethics – research merit and integrity, justice, beneficence and respect.

FOR PG STUDENTS

Please obtain the forms and policy from your supervisor.

Please note:
It is important that all students discuss and review their ethics application carefully with their supervisors PRIOR to submitting it to TUHEC.

FOR UG STUDENTS

Where relevant, arrangements with Schools for batch processing of UG project HEC applications will proceed as previously agreed as below. (HoS to advise timeline to respective schools)

  • HEC Chairman will establish a HEC Panel to review all the applications for compliance with ethical guidelines.
  • Upon deliberation, panel makes decision which will be endorsed by Chair of the HEC.
  • Non-compliant projects will be asked to amend before approval.
  • Approved projects will then be given an approval letter with an ethics number.
  • School Coordinators to collect all students ethics applications for the semester and submit all the projects together (hardcopy & softcopy) together with the summary of applicants' list as below:

THE PROCESS

1. All the application forms should be computer types. Handwritten forms will not be accepted.

2. Please make sure that your submission is complete folllowing checklist (where relevant):

  • Application Form
  • Model Patient Information Sheet
  • Model Consent Form
  • Questionnaire/Interview guide
  • Brief Research Proposal
  • Any other documents relevant to the Research Project (if any)
     

3. Applicants are also required to submit a PDF copy of their application to TUHEC email at tuec@taylors.edu.my 

4. Please save the completed Application form, Model Patient Information Sheet, Model Consent Form, Questionnaire/ Interview guide and Brief research proposal in ONE PDF File. To do so, kindly follow these simple steps:

  • Please arrange the Application form, Model Patient Information Sheet, Model Consent Form, Questionnaire/Interview guide and Brief research proposal accordingly in ONE file.
  • Please click 'Save as' and 'Save as type' PDF and name the File as :
  • "TUHEC_Application_(your full name)" e.g. TUHEC_Application_AdamAkmal
     

Important: 

  • Please make sure that your submission is complete prior to the checklist. The submission is considered "valid" when both the softcopy and hardcopy of the completed sets of the applications are sent to the office. Incomplete submission will be returned to you resulting in a delay of your application.
  • For Hardcopy submission, please print all the forms and necessary documents using 2 sides of the A4 papers (duplex printing).
     

5. Ethical review can take up to 3 months, so it is important that you plan your research accordingly and submit your application in good time. Therefore please submit your application 3 months prior to starting your research.

6. Given the increasing number of applications anticipanted, we will process applications twice a month as per schedule.

7. Please note that the submission of application (hardcopy) schedule for year 2019 application will be as follow:

9. Following the review of your application, the applicant should address all comments by the evaluation panel.

  • Please address/rectify to all the comments inquired by the TU Ethics Panel. Failure to do so within the stipulated time will result in your application being rejected.
  • Both softcopy and ha​rdcopy of the amended research project must be submitted directly to the TUHEC email and TUHEC office.
  • In the event we do not hear from applicant within the stipulated time given, we will assume applicant do not wish to proceed with the application.
