Game Design draws from the fields of computer science and programming, creative writing, psychology and graphic design. Game designers are responsible for designing characters, game rules, game environments, puzzles, art and animation.
Upon completion of this specialization/extension, students should be able to create, design and produce a new game or prototype. Students will be able to obtain in-depth knowledge of industry practiced 3D tools, experiential design, various gameplay elements and game development concept.
This module focuses on game specific design issues and enhance their understanding of basic game concepts. Students will learn: the principles behind designing specifically for the games industry; be introduced to the concept of 'playability'; and how to use industry standard authoring software such as Unity Development Engine to an intermediate level.
This module analyzes the common gameplay elements in various games including both analog and digital games. This module study on the playable features and what makes a particular games interesting to play regardless of their medium. Students will also go through simulation of game play for both analog and traditional games. This allow students to analyze through their experience and be able to identify common pattern in game design where this experience will allow students to channel their interest into the right direction in thinking when creating their own game.
This module introduces the student to the concept of ‘experiential’ design where user interaction takes place in a physical but computer controlled environment, for example, using pressure pads, microphones, webcams or other external devices to control the user experience and interaction. Learning outcomes focus on the student’s ability to design and create experimental physical user experiences for abstract or ‘real-world’ applications or uses e.g. a fine art installation or an informative interactive museum exhibition piece.
This module introduces students to the concepts and practice of 3D modeling pipeline to provide a visual look from various concepts that goes into the production of games, animations and interactive media. Student will obtain in-depth knowledge of industry practised 3D tools and how to apply to their proposed final visual aesthetics.
