“Pitching itself is a skill needed by young entrepreneurs these days prior to this it wasn’t a sought-after skill. However, with the interest of startup companies, pitching is a valuable skill to have.”
This was the opening statement made by Dr. Ingky during an Entrepreneurship Webinar that was held on 13 Feb 2022.
Hosted by BizPod, Taylor’s start-up incubator, the online session was organized to provide students with real-life stories and insights from start-up founders regarding entrepreneurship- how they started their business, how they endured hardships, and key points on how to make the business work.
Dr Lim, better known as the Digital Skin Doctor, Dr. Ingky; founded Skynfyx in 2020. Skynfyx is Malaysia’s first digital skin doctor. Besides Skynfyx, he also owns a chain of dermatology clinics in Klang Valley (Medii Skin Clinic, 2013). On top of being an entrepreneur within the exclusive dermatology industry, Dr. Ingky is also a content creator with more than 500,000 followers across various social media platforms. He also serves as an advisor for different companies, ranging from healthcare and skincare to tech start-ups.
During Dr. Lim’s sharing session, he explained the three steps for entrepreneurs on how to pitch successfully to the investors.
Step 1: Describe your company
Keep it short, simple, and concise to attract the investor's attention. Give a description of the company within the first 10 seconds of the pitch.
Step 2: Pitch Deck
Make your pitching like a storyline. There would be an opening, the body, and a closing. Try to pitch within 5 minutes and a good pitch deck should include 10 compulsory slides to persuade investors.
Step 3: Common Pitching Mistakes
Usage too many words on the slides and jargon which people may not know. Try to minimize the words and include more graphics or visuals to portray your information.
Dr. Lim also emphasizes applying Feynman Technique which is pitch your business idea to a 7-year-old and a 70-year-old, if they are able to understand your pitch, it would be easier to convince your investors. Try to refine, simplify, and concise your pitch.
Lastly, Dr. Lim highlighted that it is important to know the numbers for the company to be able to persuade investors that you know the business well. If investors were to ask about the numbers of the company and you are not able to give any statistics it is likely that they would lose interest to invest.
To signal the end of his sharing session, Dr Lim shared that the first few pitches that a young start-up entrepreneur would make it is likely to fail. To overcome this, he advised them to keep trying and learn from the mistakes they have made. Dr Lim closed his sharing session by reminding the students to always keep the pitch concise and simple.
The success of Dr. Ingky would help inspire many students who have dreams and hopes of being established entrepreneurs. This is where BizPod comes in. BizPod aims to help students proceed from their ideation stage to successfully establish a start-up business. By surrounding students with a holistic start-up ecosystem, BizPod serves as a guide to help them thrive in the start-up community. BizPod also works across multiple facilities in the University to provide students with a multi-disciplinary learning experience.
