Unravel the United Nations' achievements, a tapestry woven with international peace and security, human rights, sustainable development, and beyond!

In a world of complex issues and challenges, the United Nations (UN) stands as a testament to the power of international cooperation in addressing them. The UN defines global issues as ‘issues that transcend national boundaries and cannot be resolved by any one country acting alone.’ With 193 Member States, the UN is ‘uniquely positioned to address and solve [these] global issues’, which are vital for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and advancing overall human progress.

To tackle these global issues facing humanity, the UN’s work encompasses five main interrelated areas: Maintain International Peace and Security, Protect Human Rights, Deliver Humanitarian Aid, Support Sustainable Development and Climate Action, and Uphold International Law. Join us as we delve deeper into these areas, exploring the positive impact the organisation has had on the world and celebrating its remarkable achievements in this second article of our series!

Maintain International Peace and Security

Our exploration begins with a focus on the UN's indispensable role in maintaining global peace and security, epitomised by the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL). UNAMSIL stands as a shining example of the UN’s commitment to helping nations rebuild from the ashes of devastating conflicts, in this case, Sierra Leone's decade-long turmoil.

Born in response to the brutal 1991 Sierra Leone conflict instigated by the Revolutionary United Front (RUF), UNAMSIL not only facilitated the return of over half a million refugees but also reinstated governmental authority and essential social services in regions held by rebel forces. The mission played a pivotal role in training the local police force, establishing much-needed police stations, and promoting human rights education through the establishment of the Special Court for Sierra Leone.

Furthermore, UNAMSIL’s collaboration with various UN agencies led to the initiation of projects aimed at providing job opportunities for youth and ex-combatants, thereby helping reintegrate them into society. Simultaneously, it delivered essential services to local communities, effectively rebuilding not just institutions but also the social fabric of Sierra Leone.

Protect Human Rights

The second area on which the UN focuses is protecting human rights. This can be seen through the development of international human rights standards and the promotion of human rights education and awareness. On December 10, 1948, the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 217A was adopted to ratify the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Drafted by an international committee chaired by Eleanor Roosevelt, the document states the basis of modern international human rights law. Articles within the UN Charter include, but are not limited to, the rights to life, education, and fairness, encompassing basic civil and political, social, economic, and cultural rights. Translated into over 500 languages, the declaration was the first to establish the universal protection of fundamental human rights.

Deliver Humanitarian Aid

Moving on to the organisation’s third focus, the UN delivers humanitarian aid to people affected by natural disasters, armed conflicts, and other crises. This includes providing food, shelter, and other basic needs, as well as supporting the reconstruction of infrastructure and the delivery of health and education services. Established in April 2020, the United Nations COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund provided immense support to healthcare workers and patients. The fund facilitated the shipment of over 250 million items of personal protective equipment to healthcare workers in over 130 countries. The UN donated 250,000 face masks to healthcare workers in New York City. Throughout the pandemic, the fund also supported the upgrade of 35 primary care facilities along with three isolation and treatment centres in Bangladesh for Rohingya refugees, large enough to accommodate 465 people and 250 beds for people suffering from severe acute respiratory infection. Needless to say, without the organisation’s assistive efforts, the outcome of the pandemic may have been of greater detriment than it was.

Support Sustainable Development and Climate Action

Besides that, the UN has been at the forefront of tackling climate change. The Paris Agreement, a legally binding international treaty on climate change, was adopted by 196 parties at the 21st Conference of Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) from November 30 to December 12, 2015. The Paris Agreement works on a five-year cycle of increasingly ambitious climate action carried out by countries. Every five years, each country is expected to submit an updated national climate action plan — a Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). The Paris Agreement achieved notable success by encouraging countries like Japan, China, and the European Union to embrace carbon neutrality and set net-zero targets. Net zero means each country commits to reducing emissions close to zero, with any remaining emissions reabsorbed without significant environmental impact.

Uphold International Law

Finally, the UN has also been a cornerstone in the effort to reduce and eventually eliminate nuclear weapons — the most dangerous weapons on Earth! These weapons have the potential to destroy entire cities and kill millions, jeopardising our natural environment and the lives of future generations through their long-term catastrophic effects. While nuclear weapons have been used in warfare only twice, in the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, approximately 13,400 of them reportedly still exist in the world today. Furthermore, there have been over 2,000 nuclear tests conducted to date. Disarmament is, therefore, the best protection against these weapons, which pose dire threats to humankind.

The UN has sought to eliminate such weapons ever since its inception, including establishing the United Nations Atomic Energy Commission (UNAEC) to deal with the problems raised by the discovery of atomic energy, among others. Several multilateral treaties have since been established with the aim of preventing nuclear proliferation and testing while promoting progress in nuclear disarmament, such as the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). While no nuclear-armed nation has expressed support for a ban treaty, and in fact, a number of them, including the United States and Russia, have expressed explicit opposition, the UN remains persistent in preventing the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology.

Conclusion

The UN has not only been a beacon of international cooperation but has also achieved remarkable feats that empower individuals and communities. It stands as a model of what unity can accomplish and should inspire us to foster collaboration, whether within our local communities or across global borders. The UN's enduring presence and outstanding achievements underscore the crucial role this organisation plays in promoting peace, justice, and progress throughout the world.
