1.     How do I explain biomedical science to my parents?

Biomedical science can be hard to define, but you can describe it as the study of how the human body works, what causes diseases, and how we detect and treat them using scientific methods. It’s a flexible degree that opens doors in healthcare, diagnostics, and research. Although biomedical scientists often work behind the scenes, their contributions are essential. For example, when a patient undergoes a blood test, biomedical scientists perform laboratory investigations, interpret complex data, and provide critical information that helps doctors make accurate diagnoses. It’s not the same as becoming a doctor, but it’s just as important in healthcare.

2.     Will I get hands-on lab experience in the programme, or is it mostly theory?

The Biomedical Science programme at Taylor's is highly practical. You’ll spend a lot of time in hands-on lab sessions, using tools like microscopes, spectrophotometers, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) machines, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits, and gel electrophoresis systems. These sessions cover the full lab workflow, from sample preparation to data analysis and interpretation, and complement what you learn in lectures. This approach ensures you not only understand the scientific concepts but also know how to apply them in real-world settings.

3.     How are the lab sessions graded—is it just about getting the right result?

Not at all! Lab sessions are assessed far beyond simply producing the ‘right’ results. Assessment focuses on the entire process: how well you follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), adhere to safety protocols, record observations, and interpret findings clearly using tables, graphs, and references. Your ability to analyse data, support conclusions with evidence, and understand the principles behind the experiment demonstrates critical thinking. Mistakes can happen in the lab, but what truly matters is your ability to recognise them, identify possible sources of error, and suggest reasonable steps to correct or prevent them.

4.     How are assessments structured—is it all exams?

Don’t worry if exams aren’t your favourite! While exams are part of the programme, a large portion of your grade comes from coursework such as lab assessments, group projects, oral presentations, and video assignments. Exams test theoretical knowledge, but coursework assesses your ability to apply concepts, analyse data, and communicate scientifically. This balanced approach goes beyond memorisation, evaluating how well you think, research, and collaborate. Over time, it also helps you strengthen skills in writing, presenting, and problem-solving.

5.     Can I take modules outside the programme to broaden my knowledge or skills?

Definitely! Taylor’s encourages students to pursue a well-rounded education, and part of this involves flexibility in the academic plan. You can choose electives outside your core modules, such as psychology, business, digital media, education, or communication. This cross-disciplinary approach will help you gain new knowledge while also developing critical soft skills and building a broader worldview. It encourages you to think beyond the lab and understand how science interacts with society, culture, and technology. To ensure your choices align with your academic plan and goals, it’s best to speak with your lecturers at the start of the semester.

6.     How connected is the programme to current developments in biomedical science?

Lecturers regularly incorporate recent journal articles, global case studies, and clinical scenarios to help students engage critically with modern scientific challenges. One standout feature is the programme’s use of artificial intelligence (AI) and cutting-edge, gamified learning approaches. For example, students use award-winning 3D Organon virtual reality (VR) technology to transform abstract anatomical content into a vivid, interactive experience. Beyond the classroom, there are multiple opportunities to attend lectures and seminars delivered by industry experts. A personal highlight for me was attending a lecture by Sir Richard Timothy Hunt, Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, titled ‘Lessons from a Life in Science.’

7.     Is there a student community or club for Biomedical Science students?

Yes! As a student in the School of Biosciences, you automatically become part of the Taylor’s University School of Biosciences Club (TUSOB). TUSOB brings together students from Biomedical Science, Food Science, Biotechnology, and Applied Health Sciences programmes, providing a unique space to connect with peers across related scientific disciplines for meaningful academic exchange and collaboration. 8.     What internships have former students completed?

As a Biomedical Science student, you can undertake internships across a wide range of sectors. These aren’t limited to labs—students have gained experience in diagnostic laboratories, university research centres, clinical trial units, biotechnology start-ups, and major pharmaceutical companies, both in Malaysia and internationally. In pharmaceutical companies, students may work in areas such as marketing, quality assurance, drug safety monitoring, or research and development. These roles give students insight into how biomedical science knowledge is applied in real-world healthcare innovation and commercial settings. Upon returning, students often reflect on how their internship clarified their career goals—whether that’s pursuing a research pathway, entering the pharmaceutical industry, or continuing into postgraduate study.

9.     How does the programme prepare Biomedical Science students for careers beyond the lab?

Over the 3.5-year programme, students are prepared not only for lab-based roles but also for the broader scientific and healthcare landscape. The programme develops both technical expertise and transferable skills essential for today’s interdisciplinary job market. Taylor’s also organises Professional Development Week, a dedicated period during the semester for career-focused workshops, employer engagement sessions, mock interviews, and networking events. 10.     What advice would you give someone just starting the programme?

The Biomedical Science programme is content-heavy, especially in anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology, so make it a habit to revise weekly, use visual aids, and form small study groups. Plan your time carefully—last-minute study rarely works, and scientific writing and referencing take longer than expected, particularly early on. Take full advantage of the supportive environment by asking questions and engaging with lecturers to clarify challenging concepts. By approaching your studies with patience, consistency, and curiosity—and by using a clear study schedule to organise your workload—you’ll develop strong routines that keep you on track and help you thrive throughout the programme.
