The Story Behind the Film

As our team began shaping the idea for this Chinese New Year film, one question quietly guided our conversations: what does it truly mean to be heard? In a season centred on reunion, conversation, and shared moments, we realised that not everyone experiences communication in the same way.

For members of the Deaf community, connection is often mediated through barriers most of us never notice. Words are spoken, speeches are delivered, ideas are exchanged—yet some voices remain unseen, not because they lack meaning, but because the world is not always designed to listen differently. This tension became the emotional starting point of our story.

At the heart of the film is Hong Wei, a hearing-impaired secondary school student standing on a stage that traditionally values spoken words. His presentation is not simply about innovation, but about visibility—about asserting that communication should adapt to people, not the other way around. The app he presents, a live sign language-to-text translation tool, is born not from abstract problem-solving, but from actual challenges faced by the Deaf community.

Where Fiction Meets Real Innovation

This film is a fictional story inspired by real innovations emerging from within Taylor's ecosystem. A sibling's desire to support a loved one evolves, through this narrative, into a reflection on how technology might better serve communities that are often overlooked, exploring broader questions of inclusion, access, and understanding.

Within Taylor’s Impact Labs, ideas are not treated as isolated concepts, but as starting points for meaningful change. The initiative creates space for academics, partners, and students to move beyond technical problem-solving and towards human-centred innovation, where empathy, cultural awareness, and societal relevance guide development. Real-world projects such as TALKBIM, a mobile app focused on real-time translation of Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia into text, exemplify this approach by addressing accessibility through a deep understanding of the Deaf community in Malaysia.

TALKBIM is an AI-powered mobile app that converts Bahasa Isyarat Malaysia (BIM) into real-time text, bridging communication between Malaysia’s Deaf and Hearing communities. Locally trained and culturally accurate, it enhances social inclusion across education, work and everyday life.

The film draws inspiration from this environment rather than depicting a specific individual or project. Its characters represent broader possibilities made visible through education that prioritises impact and inclusion. The process portrayed on screen mirrors the ethos behind Impact Labs: questioning assumptions, refining intent, and recognising that meaningful innovation takes shape through care, mentorship, and interdisciplinary collaboration. The moments of tension within the film reflect this reality, reminding us that progress is often iterative, shaped by reflection as much as action.

Didrieana Izmin

“Directing ‘Speaking Hands’ was a special experience for me. Shaping the story alongside my team, and telling something unfamiliar to our own experiences, was humbling and deeply meaningful — a reminder of why I love what I do.”

— Didrieana Izmin, Film Director, [Pinang Films]

In telling this story, we did not set out to dramatise disability or present innovation as a perfect solution. Instead, the film reflects a quieter and more honest truth that impactful ideas often emerge when lived experience is supported by the right environment. The moments of tension and hesitation within the film are deliberate. They mirror the realities of designing for inclusivity within systems that were not originally built with everyone in mind. These scenes are not intended to evoke sympathy, but recognition, and a deeper understanding of why inclusive innovation matters.

Education as a Platform for Inclusive Futures

At Taylor’s, education is understood as a responsibility as much as it is a pursuit of knowledge. It extends beyond classrooms, assessments, and outcomes into how students learn to observe the world critically, recognise gaps within it, and respond with purpose. Through initiatives such as Impact Labs, education becomes a process of translation. Awareness is shaped into action, and ideas are developed with empathy, social relevance, and ethical consideration at their core.

This approach to education places intent before output. Students are guided to see technology not as an end in itself, but as a tool shaped by human values and responsibility. Learning is measured not only by technical capability, but by its ability to respond meaningfully to real lives and real barriers. Within this educational framework, inclusive innovation emerges as a way of expanding possibility, opening new pathways where limitations once defined the horizon.

By encouraging students to look beyond innovation as novelty, Taylor's cultivates a deeper understanding of innovation as service. It teaches that progress does not always arrive through bold declarations, but often begins quietly, through considered choices and the courage to act with care. In doing so, it reinforces a simple but powerful belief: education shapes the future not only through what students learn to create, but through who they learn to create for, and how those creations make space for new beginnings.
