Study Abroad: An International Student Tips on Studying in Malaysia

Learning is a continuous process, and selecting a good university in your field of interest is one of the most important decisions you need to make to keep the learning process interesting. When choosing a university, there are many factors that you should take into consideration to ensure that you get the best possible academic and social experience.

Amidst all the information out there and the different universities grabbing your attention, how do you know what to look for? Not to mention, you may also be considering whether to study locally at home or overseas in a country like Malaysia. Whether you choose locally or abroad, here’s my advice from the perspective of someone who’s been through the entire process and what are some of the must-do’s when choosing a programme and a university to study at.

What’s Your Interest?

Before even thinking about choosing a university, you should first narrow down what it is that you’d like to pursue a career in. This is the first step to determining what programme would bring you one step closer to that career.

It goes without saying that the career you choose should be something you’re interested in. Choosing a field of study that doesn’t interest you could give you the worst nightmares and would make it even more difficult to concentrate on your coursework and exams (if any).

Therefore, the most important thing is to identify your area of interest and consider the course content at the destination university.

Once you identify where your interest lies, you’re then able to research and examine whether the institution you’re looking for has the particular program. Narrowed down your options? The next step is to examine the module selection carefully and ensure that the subject matter aligns with your goals and interests. Some universities allow you to customise your course by mixing different modules as minors or electives. It’s crucial to analyse the teaching methods, reading lists, and evaluation forms to ensure they align with your preferences.

What’s the University’s Ranking?

Once you’ve gotten your interest locked in, it’s time to narrow down the university that offers what you’re looking for. You’d probably end up with a whole list of university options. Best way to work around it? Find out each university’s ranking, paying particular attention to the ranking of the programme you’re interested in.

Plus, if your home university or college has previous connections to the universities on your list, the process of relocating and starting might be easier. These can provide you with additional support and safety nets for your organisation and decision-making.

What Infrastructure Does It Have?

If you’re still struggling to narrow down your options, checking out what the university has to offer, including its facilities, is a good next step. What is it that you feel you’d need to have a good experience while studying your chosen programme?

As a PhD student in engineering, when choosing a university well-maintained laboratories and classrooms as part of its infrastructure is a big considering factor for me. Why?

The laboratories are a great place for students to learn more about theoretical concepts that are taught in the classroom.

Not only do well-designed laboratories make experiments enjoyable, but they also help students achieve academic success. Therefore, in my opinion, universities must have spacious and well-equipped laboratories to enhance students' educational opportunities.

The other important structure for me is the university library, as students spend considerable time there.

The Taylor’s University library is a magnificent four-storey structure that has designated areas for sitting and studying, as well as a computer room for completing assignments and making photocopies or prints. There’s also an entertainment room called Theatrette, where you can relax and watch a movie if you need a break.

What Are the Research Facilities Available?

While this one would be extra relevant if you’re a postgraduate student, it’d still be useful if you’re looking for an undergraduate degree because it showcases the potential the university could give.

When you’re evaluating your options, it should have the potential to provide you with a research environment. If research is right up your alley, Taylor’s University is definitely the place for you (it even has a whole floor dedicated to researchers!). The facilities include cubicles where you can sit and focus on your work, along with several meeting rooms where you can share your ideas with others. I personally love the research lounge, where you can sit, relax, have some coffee, and brainstorm ideas.

If you’re a postgraduate student, I suggest you get and stay in touch with the Centre of Higher Degree and Research (CHDR). You'll definitely find the nicest, like-minded people who’ll help you get through your research, which brings me to my next point.

Who Are the Academics From Your School?

The academics and the connections the university can connect you to are an important factor to consider when choosing where you’ll be studying. Research the different faculty profiles of the courses you wish to take. I prefer faculty profiles that include a mix of industry and academic experience, as both are necessary for a thorough understanding of any course.

If you’re finding it difficult to navigate, you could also communicate with individuals currently pursuing that said degree at the university in order to get an honest review and feedback about the academic staff and resources of the institution.

Does the University Provide Career Counseling?

It’s critical to understand how your degree will translate into a career, regardless of whether you’re continuing your education or entering the workforce. Hence, it’s useful if the university provides career counselling to help you navigate through your undergraduate or postgraduate years.

But understanding this doesn’t just help your future; it also helps you learn more about what the university could offer. By assessing the availability of career counsellors, you’re given a glimpse of the connections that the university has with the different industry partners out there!

So, no matter where you’re from (and even if you’re local!), finding a university that’s right for you doesn’t have to be difficult. If all else fails, schedule a virtual or in-person tour with the university representative to better understand how it operates.

Bonus tip: As an international student, try to meet as many people as you can and make new friends. Don’t hesitate to enquire with the university in case of any doubts, as the university always tries to help its students.
