What began as a typical academic workshop soon took on a more spirited, tactile rhythm – one that invited curiosity, loosened the shoulders, and nudged even the most seasoned lecturers into a childlike sense of exploration. This was no ordinary professional development session. This was the LEGO® Serious Play® (LSP) Methodology for Academics, and by the end of the day, it would reshape how participants thought about teaching, learning, and themselves.

 

Led by certified facilitator Jessica Low, the workshop began with an invitation: to connect hands, mind, and heart through colourful LEGO bricks and a series of progressively deeper questions. Their task was simple, yet beautifully challenging: build what they think, feel, and aspire toward.

Towers of Aspirations & Metaphor

During the Aspiration Module, the room was filled with the quiet intensity of focused construction. Each model, no matter how small or simple, held a story. They began by building simple towers that reflected themselves, before moving on to more complex builds that represented the growth they hoped for themselves or their students. Then came the stories—rich, personal, unexpected. As participants shared their metaphors, the group began to appreciate how much meaning can be revealed through something as simple as bricks. Conversations deepened. Laughter echoed. A few participants even admitted that the process allowed them to articulate ideas that had been difficult to put into words before.

Bricks as Reflection Tools

By late afternoon, the energy had moved beyond personal reflection. Everything clicked into place during the Delivery Module and Application Module. Their LEGO models became neutral ground for honest discussion—allowing the group to debate ideas intensely without feeling defensive or judged. The bricks kept everyone grounded, literally and figuratively, as they casually discussed ways to integrate LSP into classroom icebreakers, team-building exercises, conflict resolution, and even curriculum design. What surprised many was how naturally the methodology aligned with active learning principles they had always believed in—but had struggled to bring to life consistently.

Impact, Momentum, Commitment

At the end of the workshop, the tables were filled with unique 3D models representing collective understanding. The academics themselves seemed more collaborative, more hopeful, more energised. Feedback survey responses corroborated this observation, as participants rated the workshop an NPS of +46, indicating strong overall satisfaction. But perhaps the most telling sign of the workshop’s impact came in the final moments, when at least 45% of participants (5 out of 11) indicated they plan to pursue LSP facilitator certification. It was clear: LEGO Serious Play had not just sparked creativity. It had ignited a desire for mastery.
