Taylor's School of Engineering is the first in Southeast Asia to adopt the CDIO Initiative and register with the Grand Challenge Scholars Programme (GSCP), enabling us to apply these approaches to create engineers who are able to meet the real-world demands of their profession and provide solutions for the betterment of humankind.

Professor Ts Dr Sim Yee Wai profile photo

Professor Ts Dr Sim Yee Wai

Head of School of Engineering

As Head of the School of Engineering, Prof Ts Dr Sim brings 22 years of teaching and professional experience in the engineering field. Through his leadership, he supports the development of engineering education that integrates technical knowledge with real-world application.

 

Holding a PhD with research focused on the use of Machine Learning in Expert Finding, Prof Ts Dr Sim's expertise includes optimising design processes through innovative multi-agent simulation techniques.

 

His work extends beyond academia through industry-funded projects, including a collaboration with the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) on the use of ADS-B technology for UAV traffic management in Sarawak airspace. These engagements provide valuable insights into current industry practices, regulatory considerations, and applied innovation.

 

Prof Ts Dr Sim's contributions have also been recognised through the selection of one of his projects for the accelerator programme by the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC).

 

For Prof Ts Dr Sim, engineering education should develop technical competence, critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills. He also emphasises the importance of professional integrity, ethical judgement, and leadership in preparing students to contribute meaningfully to society.

 AP. Ts Dr Choo Hui Leng profile photo

AP. Ts Dr Choo Hui Leng

Programme Director of Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Honours)

As Programme Director for the Mechanical Engineering programme and Cluster Leader for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing for Sustainable Engineering, AP Ts Dr Choo brings more than 15 years of experience in higher education and engineering research.

 

Holding a PhD in Mechanical Engineering specialising in polymer processing, his areas of expertise include additive manufacturing (3D printing), process optimisation, polymer composites, and sustainable materials.

 

His work includes multidisciplinary projects such as the development of a Braille Pad and radiation shielding materials using 3D printing, alongside industry collaborations in additive manufacturing and process optimisation. These experiences have contributed to the development of the programme's Smart Manufacturing specialisation, including modules in Additive Manufacturing and Advanced Manufacturing Systems.

 

Dr Choo is a Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council UK, a Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), a Professional Technologist (Material Technology) with MBOT, and a committee member of the Institute of Materials Malaysia. He was also recognised through the RISE Educator Award: Taylorian Edition in 2022.

 

Dr Choo emphasises the importance of applying engineering knowledge in real-world settings while developing problem-solving, teamwork, communication, and adaptability. He also encourages students to cultivate professional ethics and responsibility as they prepare to contribute to industry and society.

Associate Professor Ir Dr Eric Pang Wai Leong profile photo

Associate Professor Ir Dr Eric Pang Wai Leong

Programme Director of Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

As Associate Professor and Programme Director (Electrical & Electronic Engineering) at the School of Engineering, Assoc. Prof Ir Dr Pang brings over 20 years of experience in engineering education and research, having begun his academic career in 2004.

 

Holding a PhD in Engineering, his areas of expertise include wireless communications and networking, IoT systems and smart applications, VLSI and digital design, FPGA and hardware modelling, as well as machine learning applications in communications and IoT.

 

Dr Pang has worked closely with industry through consultancy and collaborative projects with organisations such as Telekom Malaysia R&D and OCK Berhad. He is also a Professional Engineer with Practising Certificate (Ir./PEPC), ensuring strong alignment between academic delivery and industry practice.

 

His professional standing is reflected through appointments and memberships including Senior Member of the IEEE (SMIEEE) and Member of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (MIEM).

 

Dr Pang emphasises the importance of responsibility, professionalism, integrity, and accountability in engineering practice. He also encourages students to continuously learn and adapt as technologies and industry demands evolve.

Dr Firnaaz Ahamed profile photo

Dr Firnaaz Ahamed

Programme Director of Bachelor of Chemical Engineering (Honours)

As Programme Director for the Chemical Engineering programme, Dr Firnaaz brings 11 years of experience spanning both academia and industry. Through the programme, he supports students in developing a strong foundation in chemical engineering principles and their practical applications.

 

Holding a PhD in Computational Biochemical Process Engineering, Dr Firnaaz's research focuses on using computational simulations to understand how microorganisms function, regulate their metabolism, and interact within complex environments such as soil, rivers, the human gut, and industrial bioprocesses.

 

Prior to joining academia, he worked in the oil and gas services sector, where he was responsible for designing, producing, and troubleshooting drilling fluids for offshore projects across the Asia-Pacific region. This industry experience continues to inform his approach to engineering education and real-world problem solving.

 

Dr Firnaaz is also a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), United Kingdom.

 

Drawing from both academic and industry experience, Dr Firnaaz encourages students to build strong engineering fundamentals, apply their knowledge across diverse real-world contexts, and remain adaptable as technologies and industries continue to evolve.

Associate Professor Ir Dr Phang Swee King profile photo

Associate Professor Ir Dr Phang Swee King

Programme Director of Bachelor of Mechatronics Engineering with Honours

As Programme Director, Associate Professor, and PhD Supervisor, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Dr Phang brings 12 years of experience in engineering research and higher education, including four years as a postdoctoral researcher at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and eight years at Taylor's University.

 

Holding a PhD in Electrical Engineering from NUS, his expertise lies in automation and control systems, with a particular focus on robotics and drone technologies. His work includes autonomous drone operations, automated inspection flights, real-time object detection, and smart mission planning.

 

Alongside his academic responsibilities, Dr Phang collaborates with drone and robotics companies such as DJI, translating industry developments into practical modules, laboratory activities, and project-based learning experiences for Mechatronics Engineering students.

 

He is a Professional Engineer and an ASEAN Chartered Professional Engineer, and also serves as a consultant to local and international robotics companies. In addition, he holds an adjunct professor appointment with an overseas university.

 

For Dr Phang, engineering education should combine technical knowledge with practical experience. He encourages students to develop hands-on skills, critical thinking, teamwork, and the ability to adapt to emerging technologies throughout their careers.

Professor Ir Dr Jonathan Goh Hui Hwang  profile photo

Professor Ir Dr Jonathan Goh Hui Hwang

Programme Director of Postgraduate Programmes (Engineering)

As Programme Director, Professor, and postgraduate supervisor, Prof. Ir. Dr Jonathan Goh brings 19 years of experience across industry and academia, including appointments at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, Guangxi University in China, and Taylor's University.

Holding a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), his expertise focuses on renewable energy and hybrid energy systems. His research spans power system stability, smart grids, solar and wind energy, microgrid integration, decarbonisation, climate resilience, and the application of intelligent systems to engineering challenges.

 

Alongside his academic work, Prof. Ir. Dr Jonathan Goh serves as an Electrical Consultant and has led numerous industry and research initiatives related to sustainable energy systems. His professional experience is further reflected through leadership roles in engineering accreditation, programme development, and international research collaborations.

 

His contributions have been recognised through the Ten Outstanding Young Malaysian (TOYM) Award, a Google Scholar H-index of 47, and professional distinctions including Registered Professional Engineer (PEng), Chartered Engineer (CEng), APEC Engineer, and Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM).

 

Drawing from his experience in engineering practice, accreditation, and international collaboration, Prof. Ir. Dr Jonathan Goh encourages students to develop professional competence, ethical responsibility, and practical industry readiness, while gaining a broader perspective on sustainable engineering challenges and solutions.
