There is a particular kind of energy that fills the campus on graduation weekend. It arrives early, in the quiet nervousness of robes being adjusted and caps being pinned into place, and it builds through the day into something much louder: applause from the stands, names read aloud, families rising to their feet.
This past weekend, more than 2,450 students graduated across six University ceremonies and one College ceremony. Among them were graduates from all over the world, many joined by families who travelled great distances to be present for the moment. Traditional attire from dozens of cultures filled the halls and the walkways outside, a reminder that the community our students belong to reaches far beyond a single campus.
Every graduate crossing the stage carried a story that started long before the ceremony: late nights before submission deadlines, projects that failed before they worked, the encouragement of a lecturer at exactly the right moment, and the steady support of people at home who believed in them throughout. The ceremony lasts a few hours. What it recognises took years.
To our graduates: congratulations. You have earned this. We look forward to seeing where you take it.
