Jo Sze Answers Your Top 10 FAQs

1.     What led you to pursue a PhD?

After two years of working in industry, I found myself with limited fulfilment in my career progression and a growing need for greater sense of purpose in my work. This led me to pursue a PhD, driven by my interest in research and teaching, as well as my goal of becoming a university lecturer, a role that typically requires doctoral training.

2.     What led you to choose Taylor’s University?

I chose Taylor’s University for several key reasons. The research project genuinely captured my interest, while the scholarship provided financial support for my studies and the teaching opportunities contributed to my professional development as an aspiring lecturer. In addition, the availability of a research grant ensured the project was well-resourced. Overall, the combination of strong research alignment and a supportive research environment made it the right choice for me.

3.     What led you to choose your supervisor, and how has your experience working with them been?

I first met my supervisor through an introductory meeting that felt a little like a blind date, where we discussed our expectations and explored whether we would be a good fit. I ultimately chose her because her research area closely matched my interests and there was rapport from the outset. Throughout my studies, she has been consistently supportive, particularly during challenging periods, offering encouragement and practical guidance when I needed it most.

4.     What impressed you most about your PhD experience?

What impressed me most about my PhD experience was the strong culture of collegiality within the postgraduate community. There is a genuine sense of collaboration among students, with peers readily sharing ideas, time, and resources to overcome research challenges. The research staff are also approachable and always willing to help, further strengthening this environment.

5.     What research support is available in terms of facilities and funding?

Taylor’s University offers extensive research facilities and equipment. While some highly specialised instruments, such as electron microscopes, are not available on-site, strong collaborations and close proximity to neighbouring institutions make access straightforward. Funding opportunities are also available through both school-level schemes and supervisor-led grants, so prospective students are encouraged to discuss these options early with their prospective supervisor.

6.     What kind of skills development support is available?

Yes, there are many useful skills development opportunities available alongside the core research modules we are enrolled in. In particular, the Centre for Higher Degrees by Research (CHDR) organises workshops and training sessions that offer support for key competencies such as research methods, academic writing, and presentation skills. These are optional and can be attended based on individual learning needs.

7.     What does a typical week look like for you?

There is no typical week for me, as my schedule varies from day to day, with some days ranging from two hours to full-day lab sessions of around ten hours. When I am on campus, I start in the lab, running experiments and fitting in time for reading journal articles and writing up my research between sessions. Outside of research, when I have the time and energy, I also attend fitness classes such as boxing or Pilates, as well as spend time with friends, family, and my pets.

8.     Is there any expectation to work nights or weekends?

There is no expectation to work nights or weekends, although this may depend on the nature of the experiments. Our supervisors encourage a healthy work–life balance and prioritise ensuring that we are well rested. When night or weekend work is required, I sometimes adjust my schedule by planning a shorter day in the lab the following day.

9.     What main challenges do students face during their PhD?

The main challenges students face during their PhD include mental and structural pressures. Research can sometimes feel isolating and progress may occasionally slow, leading to uncertainty about next steps and, at times, a lack of motivation. Limited project funding can also be a challenge. Open communication with peers and supervisors is therefore important in helping students navigate these challenges and stay supported throughout their studies.

10.     Is a PhD as hard as people say?

A PhD is as hard as people say, but not in the way it is often assumed. You may hear remarks such as, ‘Wow, you are so smart for doing a PhD,’ but the reality is that success depends far more on resilience over intelligence. As our Executive Dean, Professor Dr P.T. Thomas, has emphasised, it is tenacity that truly sustains you throughout the PhD journey.

Making the right choice starts with having the right information, so we hope this helped!
