At Taylor’s University, Dr Danish is exploring how economies can grow without these trade-offs. Through data-driven economic modelling, his research provides evidence to help shape a more balanced path forward for countries navigating economic and environmental priorities.

Ranked among the World’s Top 2% Scientists for 2025 by Stanford University, Dr Danish is an associate professor at the School of Management and Marketing under Taylor’s Business School. This recognition reflects his influential contributions to sustainability research, where his work is deepening the understanding of sustainable economic growth.


In his current research, he challenges the assumption that economic growth and environmental sustainability are opposing priorities, providing evidence for cleaner energy transitions.


We spoke with him about what inspired his research, how empirical evidence can inform policymaking, and why balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability is essential for the future.

Q: What does your research explore?
A:
My research lies at the intersection of economy, energy, and environment, exploring how countries can pursue economic growth while accelerating the transition towards cleaner energy systems and contributing to carbon neutrality goals.


Q: What inspired your interest in this research?
A:
Growing up in areas where economic development was needed to improve livelihoods, yet where it often placed pressure on the environment, inspired my interest in understanding how these priorities could be balanced. During my doctoral studies at the Beijing Institute of Technology, this interest led to an inquiry into how policies could help achieve that balance.


Q: What does your research aim to address?
A:
Many developing countries continue to struggle with pursuing economic growth while reducing environmental impact. As these countries participate in an increasingly interconnected global economy, they need growth models that do not intensify environmental pressures. My research aims to provide empirical evidence to inform policies that support more sustainable economic growth.

Challenges and Insights

Q: What are some of the challenges involved in this research?
A:
Working with large cross-country datasets involves accounting for how countries differ in measuring economic, energy, and environmental indicators, as well as in their policy contexts. Ensuring these differences are considered is critical to making meaningful comparisons. Another challenge is translating econometric findings—statistical evidence derived from large-scale data analysis—into practical policy recommendations that can inform decision-making.


Q: Were there any findings from your research that surprised you?
A:
Yes. One surprising finding was the importance of institutional quality—the effectiveness of a country’s governance systems—and green innovation in reducing carbon emissions. This shows that progress towards carbon neutrality depends not only on transitioning towards cleaner energy systems but also on creating the conditions needed for sustainable solutions to be developed and adopted.


Q: What is one common misconception your research addresses?
A:
A common misconception is that economic growth and environmental sustainability are mutually exclusive. My research shows that this relationship is shaped by how countries design and implement policies, including those that enable a transition towards cleaner energy systems.

Q: Why is this research timely today?
A:
The world is at a critical stage of translating climate commitments into action. Following global agreements such as the Paris Agreement, countries need evidence-based approaches to accelerate cleaner energy transitions while supporting sustainable economic growth.


Q: Who can benefit from your research?
A:
Policymakers and governments can benefit from this research, using its insights to help design sustainable economic and environmental policies. Industries can also benefit by better understanding sustainability priorities and making informed decisions aligned with net-zero goals. Ultimately, society benefits through cleaner environments, stronger economies, and improved quality of life.


Q: What impact has your research had in the field?
A:
My research has had significant academic impact, with more than 16,000 citations on Google Scholar and an h-index of 59, reflecting its influence in environmental and energy economics and its relevance to sustainable development. My findings have also informed follow-up research on topics including the circular economy, renewable energy, and carbon neutrality. They have been incorporated into research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province, as well as sustainability studies by researchers at institutions such as King Saud University.

Personal Motivation

Q: How have your teaching experiences shaped your approach to this research?
A:
My teaching experiences at tertiary institutions such as Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and Taylor’s University have reinforced my interdisciplinary perspective. Helping students understand how theoretical concepts relate to real-world contexts requires bringing together perspectives from economics, environmental science, and public policy—an approach that also shapes my research.


Q: What personal philosophy has guided you throughout your research journey?
A:
‘Sustainability is not just a policy goal—it’s an ethical responsibility.’ This belief has guided my research because I recognise that the decisions we make today carry consequences for tomorrow. Therefore, I strive to provide evidence that can inform responsible decisions and contribute to a cleaner, more equitable, and more sustainable future.


Q: How can each of us contribute to a more sustainable future?
A:
Start by recognising that sustainability is a shared responsibility, and that each of us has a role to play. For researchers, this means generating knowledge that addresses real-world needs; for policymakers, translating that knowledge into effective policies; for business leaders, integrating responsible practices into their operations; and for individuals, making thoughtful choices in our everyday lives. When these efforts come together, sustainability can move beyond aspiration and into action.

Looking Ahead

Dr Danish’s research rethinks whether economic growth and sustainability are truly headed in opposite directions. By bringing economic, energy, and environmental evidence together across countries, his work reveals where these forces meet and how countries can chart a more sustainable path.


Next, he will extend his research to examine how circular economy initiatives can contribute to carbon neutrality and improve resource efficiency; how leadership can enhance environmental performance, particularly among female leaders and in family businesses; and how sustainable tourism can balance economic, environmental, and socio-cultural considerations.


Ultimately, Dr Danish’s work shows that the way forward is not about choosing between prosperity and sustainability, but generating the knowledge needed to advance both together.
