Taylor’s University marked World AIDS Day 2024 on 28th November at its Lakeside Campus, championing the global theme ‘Take the Rights Path: My Health, My Right!’. This impactful event brought together students, staff, healthcare professionals, and community partners to address health inequities, raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, and promote prevention through education, testing, and advocacy.

Organised by the Digital Health and Medical Advancement Impact Lab in collaboration with the Selangor State Health Department, the event underscored the university’s commitment to fostering inclusive healthcare access and combatting stigma. Preceded by a month-long series of activities—including free HIV and STI testing, competitions, and awareness campaigns—the initiative culminated in a day of meaningful discussions, interactive sessions, and recognition of collective efforts to create a healthier future.

A Month of Awareness and Engagement

In the lead-up to the World AIDS Day 2024 event, Taylor’s University hosted a series of impactful initiatives throughout November, aimed at fostering awareness and encouraging participation from the campus community. These activities laid the foundation for a meaningful and well-supported main event.

  1. International Testing Week (18-22 November 2024)

Held at the Lakeside Campus, this week-long initiative offered free screenings for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and Syphilis, providing students and staff with access to critical testing services. Over 250 individuals participated, taking an important step toward early detection and prevention. The screenings were made possible through collaborations with community organisations like KLASS, SEED Foundation, PT Foundation, and Persatuan Insaf Murni.

  2. Intervarsity Virtual Quiz

Designed to educate and engage students, this quiz tested participants on their knowledge of HIV and STI prevention, fostering awareness while encouraging friendly competition among medical and allied health students.

  3. PicStory Competition

Participants used the power of visual storytelling to highlight key themes around HIV awareness and stigma reduction, contributing creative and thought-provoking entries that resonated with the audience.

  4. Virtual Run

Students, staff, and supporters participated in a 5KM and 10KM Virtual Run, blending physical activity with advocacy for HIV awareness. The initiative not only encouraged healthy lifestyles but also symbolised the collective effort to fight stigma and promote prevention.

Through these initiatives, Taylor’s University demonstrated its commitment to raising awareness and empowering its community to take actionable steps toward a healthier future.

The event began with an energetic flash mob by MBBS students, followed by an opening ceremony and a thought-provoking panel discussion featuring experts like Dr Shaharudeen bin Kamaludeen and Dr Rupinder Kaur, who highlighted the importance of HIV prevention, testing, and human rights. Winners of the Intervarsity Quiz, PicStory Competition, Virtual Run, and Infographics Challenge were celebrated during the prize-giving ceremony. Attendees also explored interactive booths hosted by NGOs such as MAC, SEED Foundation, and Rumah Solehah, where talks, games, and hands-on activities reinforced the importance of stigma reduction and health equity.
