Creativity, technique and a fresh interpretation of familiar Malaysian flavours earned Diploma in Hotel Management student Wong Yu Wen the title of Champion at the ICBS: Unite Malaysian Taste Challenge 2026, Novice Division, held on 7 May 2026.
His winning creation, Taro Violet, drew inspiration from the distinctive flavour and aroma associated with taro, while taking an unexpected approach: the mocktail was crafted without using taro itself as an ingredient. Instead, Wong brought together four carefully selected ingredients to recreate its familiar sensory profile, enhanced through a nitro technique that gave the beverage a smoother texture and more refined drinking experience.
The concept stood out for its balance of imagination and technical execution. By transforming a recognisable flavour inspiration into an original mocktail experience, Wong demonstrated the attention to detail, beverage knowledge and creative thinking required in the evolving café and hospitality industry.
