Associate Professor Dr Balasubramanian Kandappan

Head of School, School of Hospitality, Tourism and Events

Associate Professor Dr Kandappan is an experienced academic and hospitality practitioner with more than 26 years spanning the hospitality industry and academia, specialising in hospitality management, service innovation, hospitality technology, and industry-academia collaboration.

Holding a PhD in Management specialising in Hospitality from Karpagam University India, he brings perspectives from collaborations with hospitality industry partners, professional bodies, and international universities into his teaching and programme design, ensuring learning remains applied, industry-certified, and experiential. His work with organisations including the Malaysian Association of Hotels and the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute has embedded industry certifications and applied projects into the curriculum, and his teaching has been recognised through the Taylor's Distinguished e-Learning Educator and Exemplary Meritorious Academic Staff awards, alongside global recognition as an Apple Distinguished Educator.

He believes students should graduate with not only knowledge and skills, but also industry readiness, critical thinking, professional networks, and the confidence to lead and innovate in the global hospitality industry.

Dr Khairiah Ismail

Dr Khairiah teaches events management, focusing on event risk, safety and security, live event projects and business events, and researches music festivals. Her students’ Hype-Lah Charity Project won Champion at the Malaysia Business Events Awards 2024.

Dr Thanam specialises in tourism marketing, tourism experiences, tourist behaviour, and sustainable tourism, with a PhD in Tourism from Universiti Putra Malaysia. Her students' heritage project in Lenggong won a PATA Gold Award for cultural heritage preservation.

Dr Vinayaraj has spent 25 years in hospitality education and industry, specialising in hotel analytics, revenue management and food and beverage management. He prepares students for global hospitality careers through applied, industry-aligned projects.

Dr Chin is a marketing and management expert with a PhD in Business Tourism. His research focuses on tourism marketing, digitalisation, consumer behaviour, and sustainable tourism. He also has over 10 years of experience in project management.

Dr Rupam moved into academia from hotel operations and now research on service management, AI, and technology adoption in hospitality. He has run consultancy and research projects with Bank Negara Malaysia, and partners in China and the Philippines.
